The following statement was issued by the United Nations peacekeeping force, UNIFIL:
This morning, a UNIFIL patrol carrying out explosive ordnance disposal along a road in the village of Ghandouriyeh, with the aim of reconnecting isolated UNIFIL positions, came under small-arms fire from non-state actors.
Tragically, one peacekeeper succumbed to his wounds, while three others were injured, two of them critically.
The wounded peacekeepers were transferred to medical facilities to receive treatment.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the brave peacekeeper who lost his life while carrying out his duty in the service of peace. We also wish the injured a swift and full recovery.
UNIFIL condemns this deliberate attack on peacekeepers who were carrying out their mandated duties. The work of explosive ordnance disposal teams is critically important within the mission’s area of operations, particularly in the aftermath of the recent hostilities.
UNIFIL has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of this tragic incident. Initial assessments indicate that the gunfire came from non-state actors alleged to be affiliated with Hezbollah.
We reiterate the obligations of all parties under international law to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property at all times. Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.
UNIFIL calls on the Lebanese government to promptly open an investigation to identify those responsible and hold them accountable for the crimes committed against UNIFIL peacekeepers.
