What will the Lebanese military delegation raise in the Pentagon meetings?

Political sources told Al-Liwaa that “the military delegation that will take part in the Pentagon meetings with the Israeli side will be headed by Brig. Gen. George Rizkallah, Director of Operations, who will present a set of key points, foremost among them a comprehensive ceasefire, or what is known as a halt to hostilities in all their forms, and a detailed report on what the army had achieved in the area south of the Litani before the war and the difficulties it faced in carrying out its work, most notably its lack of knowledge of the locations of tunnels and weapons depots, especially since Hezbollah did not disclose their existence. During the talks, it will also be stressed that, contrary to the prevailing impression in the United States and what Israel promotes — namely that the army took no steps toward making arms exclusive to the state — the army did implement the government’s decision within the means available to it. Proof of this is that 12 martyrs fell while dismantling mines, removing explosives from tunnels, or disabling munitions. The delegation will also address another difficulty, namely Israel’s failure to withdraw from the five hills it occupied, which hindered the army’s deployment in the south. Consequently, there was no response to the calls that had been made for such a withdrawal, without overlooking the Israeli attacks that continued, albeit intermittently, before the outbreak of the latest war.”

The sources noted that “the army’s needs will also be discussed, as it undertook its duties without any logistical capabilities or sufficient equipment. Therefore, the promises made to the army in 2024 — when it was asked to enter the area south of the Litani and remove armed manifestations, in return for aid and support to be provided to it — were not fulfilled. Accordingly, there is a need to provide the army with equipment and other forms of support.”

The sources expressed their “belief that if a ceasefire is established, the discussion will turn to technical matters, because the security track is a technical one that addresses the Israeli withdrawal and the army’s deployment, and this may take place at a later stage. It is not the military committee’s task to discuss the disarmament of Hezbollah, as this issue will be handled within the political track set to begin on June 2 and 3.”
