The vicinity of the United Arab Emirates embassy in Damascus witnessed a popular demonstration yesterday, organized by Syrians expressing solidarity with the Palestinian cause and support for Palestinian prisoners, raising the Palestinian flag. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted that the protest drew remarkable interaction from some security personnel assigned to guard the embassy.
According to the Observatory’s sources, a number of demonstrators climbed the embassy building to express their stance, in a move considered a symbolic escalation within the popular action. One security officer reportedly responded symbolically by kissing the Palestinian flag carried by the demonstrators, which sparked widespread reactions among those present.
In this context, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the following statement:
“The United Arab Emirates strongly condemns and denounces the acts of vandalism, attempted property damage, and assaults targeting its mission and the residence of its head of mission in Damascus. It also expressed its rejection and strong objection to the unacceptable insults directed at the national symbols of the State.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized in its statement the UAE’s categorical rejection of such destructive practices, stressing the need to protect diplomatic premises and personnel in accordance with international laws and norms, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which guarantees full immunity for diplomatic buildings and staff.
The UAE called upon the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic to fulfill its duties in securing the embassy and its personnel, investigate the circumstances of these assaults, ensure they are not repeated in the future, and take all necessary legal measures to hold those responsible accountable.”
This incident comes amid rising diplomatic tensions in Syria, with the UAE reaffirming its commitment to the protection of its diplomatic premises and personnel under international law.
