Axios, citing U.S. officials, revealed that Washington and Tehran have reached a preliminary understanding pending final approval from U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to the information, the proposed agreement includes a memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, alongside the launch of a negotiating track on Iran’s nuclear program.
The sources indicated that Trump informed mediators of his desire to wait a few days before making a final decision on the understanding.
The agreement also includes, according to Axios, an Iranian pledge not to seek possession of a nuclear weapon, in exchange for lifting the naval blockade on Iran during the implementation period of the understanding.
The memorandum also stipulates guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, without restrictions or fees, in a move seen as an attempt to reduce tensions in the region and ensure the stability of international trade and energy routes.
