German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius commented on Washington’s announcement of plans related to the withdrawal of about 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany, stressing that the next phase requires greater European self-reliance in the defense sphere.
In this context, he said:
Boris Pistorius said on Saturday, in response to Washington’s announcement, that Europeans must assume greater responsibility for their own security, affirming that Germany is “on the right track” by expanding its armed forces (the Bundeswehr), accelerating the pace of equipment procurement, and strengthening defense infrastructure.
He noted that the number of U.S. forces stationed in Germany is close to 40,000 troops, pointing out that their presence serves the interests of both sides, although he had previously expected the possibility of a reduction in the American presence in Europe.
He added that European countries, including Germany, have already begun increasing their defense spending, but that closing the existing military gaps will take years to achieve the required readiness.
