Key points from Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam’s remarks at Damascus Airport during his visit to Syria
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said from Damascus Airport that “significant progress” had been made on a number of outstanding issues between Lebanon and Syria, noting that the talks were held in “a positive spirit and with a shared commitment to cooperation,” with the results of this progress expected to emerge in the near term.
Salam explained that the discussions addressed follow-up on the implementation of the agreements signed between the two countries, particularly those related to the transfer of convicted prisoners to Syria, in addition to the issue of uncovering the fate of missing Lebanese and Syrians.
He stressed the importance of controlling the border between the two countries and strengthening joint coordination to facilitate the return of Syrian displaced persons to their country, affirming that Lebanon “will not allow its territory to be used again as a platform to offend its Arab brothers, especially Syria.”
He also announced an agreement to launch a joint Lebanese-Syrian business council, which will hold its meetings soon, alongside continued political consultations and intensified ministerial-level communication between the two sides in the coming phase.
