Minister of Information, lawyer Dr. Paul Markos, visited Press Syndicate President Aouni Al-Kaaki and members of the syndicate council, where discussions focused on the importance of responsible media discourse and avoiding incitement.
Following the meeting, the Minister stated:
“My visit today to the Press Syndicate is to engage with a key reference body that plays an important role in consultation on combating inflammatory media rhetoric, avoiding tension, division, sectarian incitement, and anything that may disturb internal stability in the country.”
He noted that “media discourse should carefully consider the choice of words and expressions that do not infringe on the dignity of others,” adding: “Words carry responsibility, and freedom must be exercised responsibly.”
He also pointed out that he briefed President Al-Kaaki and the council members on the Ministry’s efforts, emphasizing “the need for integration between public and private media in order to preserve both freedom and national responsibility.”
For his part, Al-Kaaki welcomed the Minister, saying: “In such difficult circumstances, coordination with various media outlets, as well as with the Ministry, is essential.”
Secretary-General of the Press Syndicate, Dr. Talal Hattoum, added:
“With composure, balance, clear meanings, and a solid legal background, along with a real understanding of both public and private media realities, the Minister stressed the necessity of keeping media discourse away from incitement, strife, and anything that undermines national stability. He affirmed that political differences should not lead to abandoning national responsibility or descending into abusive rhetoric, especially at this critical and sensitive moment in Lebanon’s history.”
