MP Gebran Bassil criticized the government’s performance during a session of the Lebanese Parliament, holding it responsible for the current situation, particularly regarding constitutional and electoral obligations.
Bassil said: "The government is responsible for where we have arrived because it committed in its ministerial statement to establishing a national defense strategy and did not do so despite our repeated demands, and because it was ‘unable and negligent’ in conducting the elections on time, particularly regarding expatriate voting."
He also warned about the implications of extending terms, stating: "I warn those concerned with proper representation that this extension carries premeditated intentions, and those benefiting from it will be known as ‘MPs who extended their own mandates.’"
Bassil concluded by stressing that action will be taken to challenge what he described as an unacceptable development, saying: "We will do everything necessary to stop the farce that happened today."
