Reuters quoted a senior Iranian official as confirming that the current phase remains governed by careful calculations, amid ongoing tensions with the United States, despite talk of a possible de-escalation.
He said: "Keeping the Strait of Hormuz open will remain conditional on adherence to the terms of the ceasefire between Iran and the United States."
Pointing to the complexities of the negotiating landscape, he explained that "there are still fundamental differences between Iran and the United States, including over nuclear issues, which necessitate serious talks."
He noted that there is still room for progress, adding: "It is possible to reach a preliminary agreement in the coming days, with the possibility of extending the ceasefire."
He also stressed Tehran's readiness to provide international guarantees, affirming that "Iran is prepared to reassure the world about the peaceful nature of its nuclear program if its demands are met."
He concluded by indicating that any initial understanding could open the door to a broader negotiating track, saying that "a preliminary agreement would create room for talks on lifting sanctions and compensation for war damages."
