The Ministry of Agriculture announced in a statement that, “In a swift move and in response to current living challenges, it continues to play its pivotal role in supporting farmers and protecting consumers by launching targeted initiatives that contribute to market stability and enhance food security.”
It added: “Following the positive response to the ‘20 kg of Potatoes Helps’ campaign, the Ministry, in cooperation with the Potato Farmers’ Union in the Bekaa, has secured a limited quantity of potatoes imported from Egypt, to be directly supplied to local markets. This aims to stabilize prices and reduce fluctuations until potato production in Akkar begins appearing in the markets from the first week of April, with local quantities expected to fully meet market demand by mid-month.”
The Ministry continued: “Under this initiative, potatoes will be available in markets at a price not exceeding 400,000 Lebanese Pounds per 10 kg, through participating retail points and stores. This step aims to ease the burden on citizens and ensure access to a basic commodity of suitable quality at a fair price during this critical period.”
It emphasized that “this initiative is a temporary measure within a comprehensive response plan that supports purchasing power, maintains supply-demand balance, and prevents exploitation, thereby reinforcing confidence in the local market.”
The Ministry also stressed “its continued commitment to working alongside farmers and consumers through practical policies and initiatives that address challenges and strengthen the resilience of the agricultural sector as a cornerstone of national food security.”
It concluded by reaffirming its ongoing message: “Agriculture is the pulse of the land and life.”
