Benghazi conference ignites reform path.. a new plan to rescue Libya’s justice system

The Justice and Reform Conference concluded in the city of Benghazi after three days under the slogan “Justice is the foundation of reconciliation,” with the participation of a select group of officials, experts, academics, and researchers in the fields of the judiciary and reform.

The conference produced a series of recommendations aimed at supporting the development of Libya’s justice system and strengthening human rights principles within correctional institutions, in line with internationally recognized standards.

Dr. Gazia Shueitir, a member of the scientific committee and the conference’s secretary-general, told Sputnik that the أبرز proposals included creating the position of a judge for the execution of sentences and granting the role broad powers to reduce prison overcrowding, in addition to activating the system of conditional release in accordance with legal regulations, and strengthening oversight of detention procedures within correctional institutions to ensure their legality.
