U.S. special envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said that Syria is witnessing “notable progress” during the current period, stressing that recent developments are opening the door to broad opportunities to achieve stability and advance the recovery process for the Syrian people.
In a post on the platform X, Barrack said that “Syria has become a testing ground for a new regional alliance that brings together diplomacy, integration, and hope for the entire region,” noting that the decision to lift sanctions on Damascus constitutes “a bold and hopeful step.”
The U.S. official’s remarks came after a meeting in Riyadh between Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and U.S. President Donald Trump, which addressed the next phase in Syria.
They also came after a meeting Barrack held with al-Sharaa at the People’s Palace in Damascus, where the two sides discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between Washington and Damascus, support recovery and reconstruction efforts, as well as counterterrorism issues and strengthening stability in the region.
