Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced that major fires had broken out on two oil tankers after they passed through what it described as a “mine-laden route” in the Strait of Hormuz, blaming parties linked to the United States for what happened.
The Revolutionary Guard said the two tankers were subjected to what it called “deception by American espionage organizations,” which led to large-scale fires erupting on board. It warned other vessels against approaching the maritime routes it said were mined, in order to safeguard crews and property.
In a statement, it stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is now witnessing an unprecedented level of danger, saying it has become “completely closed” as a result of what it described as American attacks, and warning that continued escalation would affect energy export traffic in the region.
The Revolutionary Guard added that the continuation of U.S. military operations would prevent the export of oil, gas and fertilizers from the region, amid rising tensions threatening one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors.
