Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned of the growing Israeli influence in the Horn of Africa, considering that such expansion would increase tensions and further complicate the region’s security and political landscape.
In an official statement, Aboul Gheit announced his categorical rejection of the move to open what is known as “Somaliland” as a representative office or embassy in occupied Jerusalem, stressing that such actions are “legally null and void” and lack any international legitimacy.
He pointed out that establishing relations with entities not internationally recognized constitutes a violation of international rules and norms, and also contributes — according to the statement — to supporting separatist projects that serve Israeli occupation policies aimed at entrenching its presence in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Aboul Gheit stressed that the Horn of Africa region already faces complex security and political challenges, making any new interventions or alignments an additional factor in destabilizing the situation and raising the level of regional tension.
