Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will head to the US capital, Washington, on Monday at the head of a high-level government delegation, in a visit aimed at reviving the path of the strategic partnership between Iraq and the United States, amid expectations of concluding new understandings in the oil and gas sectors, alongside discussions on security, investment, and economic cooperation.
Iraqi government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi said the visit comes in response to an official US invitation and reflects Baghdad’s approach to building foreign relations based on mutual interests, noting that its timing carries particular significance in light of rapidly unfolding regional developments.
Al-Aboudi explained that the economic aspect will top the agenda of the Washington talks, pointing out that the visit differs from previous ones in that it focuses primarily on strengthening trade and investment partnerships and opening new horizons for cooperation between the two countries.
Expected Understandings in the Energy Sector
The visit is expected to witness the signing of memorandums of understanding in the oil and gas fields, including the participation of specialized American companies in developing Iraqi oil production and boosting export capacity, in addition to discussing projects aimed at diversifying export outlets and reducing the impact of any potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Enhancing the Capabilities of the Iraqi Army
The agenda of the talks also includes the file of security and military cooperation, as the needs of the Iraqi forces and plans to develop their capabilities and armament will be discussed within the framework of the existing cooperation between Baghdad and Washington.
The Iraqi government spokesman affirmed the continuation of work under the Strategic Framework Agreement signed between the two countries, stressing that there is no direction toward amending it and that any new understandings will come within this framework.
The Dollar and Regional Balances on the Table
Al-Zaidi’s visit comes after Washington resumed part of its dollar shipments to Iraq following a period of suspension, in a step seen as an indication of reactivating some channels of financial cooperation.
The visit carries political and economic dimensions as Baghdad seeks to maintain a delicate balance in its relations with Washington and Tehran, amid continuing regional tensions and their repercussions on the files of security, energy, and the economy.
