Iranian state media announced that the Revolutionary Guard had carried out an attack targeting a command center belonging to US forces in the al-Tanf area in southeastern Syria, in a move Tehran said came in response to the killing of Iranian soldiers in the city of Iranshahr.
Iranian television, via the Telegram app, quoted a Revolutionary Guard statement saying that a “surprise attack” had targeted the special operations command center of what it described as the “enemy” in Syria’s al-Tanf region.
US authorities have not, so far, issued an official comment on the nature of the attack or the extent of the damage resulting from it.
This development comes amid continuing regional tensions, while the al-Tanf base is considered one of the sensitive military sites in the border triangle between Syria, Iraq, and Jordan.
Last February, the United States announced the withdrawal of its forces from the base and its handover to the Syrian authorities.
