
The Internal Security Directorate in Suwayda announced the arrest of several of its personnel after images circulated on social media showing them insulting local religious symbols.
In a statement, the directorate said the individuals involved were immediately detained, and that the relevant authorities have begun taking the necessary legal measures against them in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.
In a separate statement, the Syrian Ministry of Interior said: “The Ministry of Interior clarifies that these actions are categorically rejected and do not represent the principles of the security institution or the values upon which the Syrian state is founded.”
The statement continued: “The Syrian state is a state for all its citizens, encompassing its various sects and components. Respecting the dignity of citizens and safeguarding the religious and social symbols of all communities without discrimination is a fundamental principle guiding its institutions.”
It added: “Accordingly, any insult or offense directed at any community or its symbols, by any individual regardless of their position, constitutes behavior that violates the law and the applicable regulations.”
The ministry further stressed that “religious and social diversity in Syria has always been a source of richness for society, and maintaining mutual respect among all its citizens remains a key pillar for strengthening stability and civil peace.”
