The US administration announced the imposition of new 25% tariffs on most goods imported from Brazil, in a move reflecting an escalation in trade tensions between Washington and Brasilia.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump had instructed the US Trade Representative to move forward with implementing the tariffs, justifying the decision by what he described as a "lack of good faith" on the part of the Brazilian government in trade negotiations with the United States.
Rubio said in a post on the platform X that the administration of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had not shown serious cooperation during the talks, stressing that this was the main reason behind the decision to impose the new tariffs on the majority of Brazilian imports.
