The National Litani River Authority announced in a statement that it will be forced to fully halt operations at the Ibrahim Abdel Aal Hydropower Plant, which currently produces around 4 megawatts, for two days starting Tuesday, the 24th of this month. The shutdown is due to an unexpected failure in the main sluice of Unit 1. This temporary closure allows technical teams to carry out essential maintenance work, which requires stopping the entire plant and draining the pressurized conduits to ensure equipment safety and proper execution of repairs.
The Authority confirmed that the Arqash and Helou plants will continue normal electricity production, thanks to the integrated management of water resources from the Mashghara River, Ain Zarqa, and the Abdel Aal-Anan tunnel springs, as well as the Jezzine waterfalls and the Bisri River.
It also noted that during the shutdown, water from the upper Litani basin will be stored in Lake Qaraoun, to be later used to enhance hydropower production once operations resume.
