The US administration has imposed new sanctions on Iran, targeting the newly established Iranian body overseeing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as part of an escalating campaign of economic pressure running in parallel with military operations.
The sanctions came hours after US strikes targeted an Iranian military facility following the downing of Iranian attack drones, according to US officials.
The sanctions target the authority supervising navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as any entities or individuals cooperating with it, after it began imposing transit fees of up to $2 million on ships passing through the strait.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that "the Iranian military's latest attempt to extort global maritime trade is proof that the policy of economic pressure has driven the regime into financial desperation."
Meanwhile, the United States has continued its blockade of Iranian ports for more than a month, while President Donald Trump confirmed that the measures "will remain fully in force until a final agreement is reached."
The new sanctions come amid intensive negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the war and reaching a long-term settlement between the two sides, while Trump warned that his country may "finish the job" if the talks fail.
