Teams from the Litani River National Authority continued field operations to clean the riverbed and remove direct sources of pollution in the town of Ghazzeh in West Bekaa, as part of ongoing measures to protect water resources and curb environmental encroachments.
The operations included removing violations along the riverbanks and river properties, as well as clearing animal waste and dead cattle that had been dumped in and around the riverbed, given the serious health and environmental risks they pose. An earthen barrier was also constructed along one section to prevent waste from being dumped again and to limit pollutants from seeping into the water.
These steps come after a field inspection carried out by technical teams revealed that some non-compliant livestock farms were discharging their liquid and solid waste directly into the river without any treatment facilities, in violation of the relevant environmental standards and regulations.
The Authority affirmed that it will continue to pursue this file and take legal and environmental measures against violators in coordination with the competent authorities, including a graduated series of actions that may ultimately lead to requesting the closure of non-compliant farms, in order to protect water resources, public health, and environmental safety.
