Lebanon has filed a formal complaint with the United Nations against Iran, accusing Tehran of violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, interfering in Lebanon’s sovereign decision-making, and causing serious repercussions for the country as a result of its involvement in the ongoing conflict, according to the contents of the letter.
The complaint, which was registered as an official document before the Security Council and the General Assembly, said it challenges the Iranian account of the assassination of Iranian diplomats in Beirut. It noted that the Iranian embassy did not coordinate with the Lebanese authorities on certain procedures related to the incident, and that a number of those killed were not officially registered as diplomats, in contravention of the provisions of the Vienna Convention.
According to the report, the letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council included documentation of what it described as repeated violations, stating that Lebanon holds the Iranian side responsible for involvement in acts that resulted in widespread loss of life, the displacement of large numbers of residents, and the destruction of property, in addition to what it described as repercussions linked to regional escalation.
The complaint stressed that Lebanon has the right to seek international accountability for any party that violates international laws and norms or drags the country into conflicts against the will of its constitutional institutions, at a time when Beirut continues to submit repeated complaints to the United Nations over Israeli violations as well, placing Lebanon on a parallel diplomatic track on more than one front.
