Baabda Moves... and Two Key Points for the Negotiating Delegation
A senior political source told Nidaa Al-Watan that “President of the Republic Joseph Aoun, in light of the dangerous escalation over the past 48 hours, has continued his domestic and foreign contacts aimed at halting the Israeli attacks and preventing their expansion, amid clear indications that Beirut and the southern suburbs remain insulated from the circle of military escalation, against the backdrop of ongoing international and regional efforts to prevent the situation from sliding into a broader confrontation that could temporarily hinder the political and diplomatic efforts being made to contain the tension.”
The source explained that “President Aoun met away from the media with the Lebanese military delegation before its departure to Washington to participate in Pentagon meetings on Friday, May 29, where the delegation will raise two key points: first, the need to consolidate the ceasefire and prevent its collapse under the pressure of field escalation; and second, the Lebanese Army’s logistical, military, and financial needs, enabling it to complete its deployment up to the southern international border and strengthen its presence in sensitive areas, in implementation of international commitments and in protection of internal stability.”
The source also revealed “active political efforts to calm tensions and lower the level of escalation in domestic political rhetoric, especially after the escalatory remarks by Sheikh Naim Qassem, which political circles considered out of step with the current context, particularly at a time when Iran is negotiating with the United States and making successive concessions on more than one level, while Qassem is delivering rhetoric that raises the level of internal tension and lays the groundwork for internal strife.”
