President Joseph Aoun said during a meeting with the ambassadors of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway that the ongoing Israeli attacks on Beirut’s southern suburbs, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley will not achieve Israel’s objectives.
Aoun stressed that Lebanon’s position remains firm, referring to last week’s Cabinet decision affirming Lebanon’s full and final commitment to the provisions of the declaration to cease hostilities agreed upon in November 2024, in order to preserve peace and stability, while obligating Israel to halt its attacks across all Lebanese territory.
He added that Lebanon has informed major powers and the United Nations of its full readiness to resume negotiations and discuss the necessary security points aimed at stopping the dangerous Israeli escalation.
The president also emphasized that the government’s decision to restrict weapons exclusively to the authority of the state will be implemented in accordance with the plan set by the Lebanese Armed Forces once security conditions allow. He noted that targeting the army or its commander under such sensitive and dangerous circumstances is unacceptable, suspicious, and serves attempts to undermine state authority and question its capabilities.
According to Aoun, such actions align, directly or indirectly, with efforts to drag Lebanon into the ongoing regional war, against the will of the majority of Lebanese who are weary of wars and their consequences and insist that only the state has the right to decide on war and peace.
For their part, the three ambassadors reaffirmed their countries’ solidarity with Lebanon during this difficult period and expressed readiness to provide the necessary assistance to Lebanese citizens displaced from their villages.
