U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy would attack Cuba on its way back from Iran.
Trump said in a speech delivered Friday evening before the nonprofit Forum Club of the Palm Beaches: "Cuba has problems. On the way back from Iran, we will have one of the largest aircraft carriers, perhaps the USS Abraham Lincoln—the largest in the world—and we will bring it in to anchor about 100 yards off the shore, and they will say, 'Thank you very much. We surrender to you.'"
Journalists who attended the event said Trump's expression suggested sarcasm, making it difficult to determine whether his remark was serious or made in jest.
The White House announced that Trump had imposed new sanctions on senior Cuban officials as part of his administration's efforts to force the ruling regime to relinquish power.
