French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot announced that France has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council in light of the escalating developments in Lebanon.
In a post on X, Barrot said that “France requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council following the ‘rapid deterioration of the situation’ in Lebanon.”
The French minister also revealed that Paris had taken immediate humanitarian steps to support Lebanon, noting that “France has allocated €6 million in emergency aid to support humanitarian organizations on the ground assisting the Lebanese people under the current circumstances.”
He further indicated that “France is preparing to send 20 tons of humanitarian aid to Lebanon, with the shipment expected to begin arriving tomorrow,” while also announcing the opening of the contribution fund managed by the Crisis Center at the French Foreign Ministry (Quai d’Orsay) to companies and local authorities willing to support humanitarian efforts.
On the political front, Barrot stressed that “France continues its contacts with the Lebanese and Israeli authorities in order to avoid the country sliding into chaos and to work toward a ceasefire,” while also pursuing what he described as “the necessary path toward the disarmament of Hezbollah.”
