Since the beginning of President General Joseph Aoun’s term, Lebanon has seen a significant improvement in its ranking in the World Press Freedom Index, issued annually by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). It moved up from 140th place at the start of the term to 132nd in 2025, and then to 115th on April 30, 2026.
In fact, this index reflects efforts to support media freedoms and entrench the principles of freedom of opinion and expression in the country, as Lebanon has advanced ahead of other neighboring Arab and Asian countries, despite repeated Israeli attacks on journalists and other factors—such as the failure to pass the new media law bill and judicial issues—that continue to hinder further progress.
