The European Union warned that it reserves the right to respond to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on European cars and trucks to 25%.
The bloc said Washington may be on the verge of violating a trade agreement reached between the two sides in the summer of 2025, stressing through the European Commission that it would “keep all options open” to protect its interests if the United States fails to honor the deal.
Trump had announced on his Truth Social platform his intention to raise tariffs on cars imported from the European Union to 25% next week, accusing the bloc of failing to comply with the agreement and asserting that vehicles manufactured داخل the United States would be exempt from any duties.
The move comes less than a year after the “Turnberry” agreement signed in Scotland in 2025, which set a 15% ceiling on tariffs for European cars.
European officials, for their part, described the decision as “unacceptable,” stressing that the EU would respond firmly and clearly at a time of mounting trade tensions between the two sides, particularly amid disputes linked to other international crises.
Estimates indicate that Germany’s auto sector will be among the hardest hit by the tariffs, while the trade agreement is still awaiting ratification within EU member states.
