The next phase, during the extension period of the ceasefire, is set to focus on consolidating the de-escalation agreement between Lebanon and Israel, with the parties concerned expected to abide by the terms of the agreement, under a follow-up mechanism that is in the process of being activated.
According to available information, preparations are underway for a security meeting to be held at the US Department of Defense on the 29th of this month, where multiple files are expected to be discussed, most notably the issue of limiting weapons to state control, strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese army, as well as the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the redeployment of the Lebanese army in the border areas.
The meeting is also expected to address the mechanism for monitoring the ceasefire agreement through activating what is known as the “mechanism,” with a focus on independent verification procedures for the implementation of the agreement’s provisions.
In the same context, work is continuing on drafting a “declaration of intent” statement between the two sides, which is not expected to be issued in the near term, and which would define the general framework for relations, mutual commitments, and each side’s red lines.
