President Joseph Aoun told the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, former Iraqi President Barham Salih, that the Israeli attacks on Lebanon have caused a major humanitarian catastrophe as a result of the displacement of more than one million Lebanese from the targeted areas, and that Lebanon needs urgent assistance, noting that the repercussions of the displacement will be significant even after a ceasefire.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from Baabda Palace:
I arrived in Lebanon to convey a message of solidarity and support for the Lebanese people and the state in these difficult circumstances.
I saw firsthand the scale of the destruction in Beirut and the suffering of civilians, with more than one million displaced because of the war.
During our meeting with His Excellency the President, we reaffirmed the support of the international community and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for Lebanon, as well as our partnership with the government to assist the displaced.
We stressed the need to mobilize international support to meet the growing humanitarian needs.
Humanitarian aid is essential, but the fundamental solution remains ending the war and achieving lasting peace.
We are working to provide assistance to displaced Lebanese, in cooperation with Lebanese authorities and international organizations.
