Deputy UN envoy to Syria: “Trials of figures from the Assad regime have begun for committing crimes against humanity”

The Deputy UN Envoy to Syria confirmed that the trials of a number of figures from the former regime have begun over accusations related to committing crimes against humanity, while stressing at the same time the need to consider all defendants innocent until proven guilty in accordance with due legal process.

Regarding the situation on the ground, he pointed out that Sweida province is suffering from a state of security and political instability, amid ongoing disputes among local Druze factions.

The UN official also renewed questions directed at Israel بشأن the fate of Syrian detainees it holds, amid the absence of clear information on this issue.

He also noted that the economic deterioration in Syria has contributed to fueling protests and critical positions, further complicating the overall scene and posing additional challenges to the path toward stability.
