The Daily Mail, citing political sources, revealed that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told a number of people close to him that he is considering stepping down from his post, amid the political challenges facing his government following the results of the recent local elections.
According to one source, Starmer believes the current state of political turmoil cannot continue, and if he decides to resign, he would prefer to do so “with dignity and on his own terms,” while avoiding any politically fraught or embarrassing scene.
At the same time, some of his allies are urging him to wait for the results of the by-election in the Makrville constituency in Greater Manchester, where the prospect of a victory by Labour politician Andy Burnham is seen as a factor that could open the door to a broader debate over the party’s leadership.
This comes at a time when the Labour Party is facing notable political losses, most prominently losing control of the Welsh Parliament for the first time, in addition to losing around 1,400 seats in a number of areas across England, increasing the pressure on the current leadership, despite Starmer having previously denied any intention to resign.
