All field indicators show that Israel is not respecting the ceasefire and is pressing ahead with military operations despite the extension of the truce for 45 days following the latest round of talks. On a parallel track, attention is fixed on the security negotiations between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy on the 29th of this month at the Pentagon, where Lebanon will be represented by a military delegation alongside an Israeli military delegation, with the political track of the negotiations set to resume on June 2 and 3.
It also appears that the truce, or ceasefire, is effectively suspended at a time when preparations are under way for both security and political negotiations. Regarding the security talks, a source told Al-Anbaa electronic that Lebanon must define the ceiling of these arrangements and avoid any security cooperation that could affect the domestic situation, explaining that the map of the security arrangements remains unclear so far. The source stressed the importance of focusing on the ceasefire issue, especially since the truce remains fragile to this point, noting that Israeli officials are declaring that no truce exists.
In this context, the source pointed out that it is still unclear whether the security negotiations will discuss the issue of the "pilot area" raised in the US paper submitted to the Presidency of the Republic, explaining that the "pilot area" process means cooperation between the Lebanese and Israeli armies in a single operational zone in order to clear it of illegal weapons. The source said Lebanon is not in a position to undertake such a step at this stage or later.
The source also referred to some American ideas that have been heard, including the creation of a new brigade in the Lebanese army to be trained and armed by the United States and prepared to implement the state’s plan to place all weapons exclusively under its control, noting that this issue also remains unclear.
The ceiling of political negotiations
On the political negotiations track, the state needs to define the ceiling of political bargaining. The political headings have, to some extent, become known, namely Israel’s withdrawal from the south, the return of the displaced, reconstruction, disputed points along the Blue Line, and the release of prisoners.
So far, the Lebanese state has not defined the political ceiling, according to a source speaking to Al-Anbaa electronic. The source stressed that it is important not to go beyond the 1949 Armistice Agreement, pointing to talk that has circulated about ending the conflict, and said there is no consensus on such a course and that it would be difficult to pass any political agreement of that kind.
The same source also revealed that there is a proposal related to signing a non-aggression treaty, and that this too is among the ideas being discussed by Lebanese officials.
The source stressed the need for Lebanon not to delay in defining its political ceiling, because the political ceiling set by the United States and Israel is a peace treaty. It is well known that Lebanon cannot currently move toward a peace treaty, and there is no Arab cover for such a step, nor, of course, is there Lebanese consensus.
