The US website Axios revealed that US President Donald Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw Israeli forces from Syrian and Lebanese territory during a phone call between the two following Trump’s meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey.
According to the website, a US official said Trump told Netanyahu that the continued Israeli military presence inside Syrian territory is heightening tensions and could open the door to a broader escalation in the region.
Axios also reported, citing informed sources, that the US administration has concluded that Netanyahu is not showing sufficient willingness to make the concessions Washington is demanding on the Syrian and Lebanese files, amid US efforts to ease tensions and reorganize the security landscape in the region.
