MP Marwan Hamada clarified his position on the parliamentary extension during a session of the Lebanese Parliament, emphasizing his commitment to stability and the protection of state institutions.
Hamada stated: "No one can lecture us, or the Democratic Gathering, or its current and former president. We are honored to have voted for stability."
He stressed the council’s stance under exceptional circumstances, adding: "We will not allow anyone to classify us as ‘opportunity MPs’ or ‘extension MPs’ because the extension is due to force majeure, and any challenge before the Constitutional Council could lead to the absence of the Parliament, the collapse of the government, and the undermining of state institutions while Lebanon is under aggression."
Hamada underlined that the Parliament acted under force majeure, saying: "The Parliament submitted to the force majeure represented by the war and maintained public order."
He warned of potential legal challenges, emphasizing: "Any appeal before the Constitutional Council could lead to the absence of the Parliament, the collapse of the government, and the undermining of state institutions while Lebanon is under major aggression."
He explained that the council’s vote was aimed at safeguarding the state, adding: "The Parliament voted for stability at a time when the Lebanese state is vanishing, and with this decision we are trying to preserve institutions and prevent this collapse."
Hamada concluded with a warning regarding those responsible for the crisis, saying: "The entity that threatens to undermine the laws is the entity that brought the country here… to hell."
