Education Minister Rima Karami said on Friday that any decision related to official examinations must stem from a genuine understanding of students’ circumstances, stressing that the decision must preserve the value of the official certificate and that a complete cancellation cannot be pursued because of its impact on its credibility.
Karami announced the adoption of three consecutive sessions for the secondary school certificate exams, allowing each student to sit for two consecutive sessions. The first session will be held on June 29, the second on July 27, and the exceptional session on September 7.
The ministry also decided to cancel this year’s intermediate certificate exams, with school grades and an in-school exam to be adopted as an alternative.
Karami stressed that the current year had not been a normal one, noting that she is a daughter of the civil war and understands the meaning of anxiety, fear, and instability.
She also revealed that a comprehensive national study had been conducted on the number of public secondary schools used to accommodate displaced people, praising school administrations that continued their work and noting that completion rates in some subjects had reached 100%.
She pointed out that she had met with a large number of students from various Lebanese regions, noting that there was strong insistence on holding the secondary certificate exams.
