Military escalation has returned to the Yemeni scene after the Houthi Ansar Allah group announced that Sanaa International Airport had come under airstrikes, while the Yemeni government said the operation targeted the airport runway to prevent an Iranian plane from landing.
Yahya Saree, spokesperson for the Houthi-affiliated armed forces, said the airport was hit by a series of Saudi airstrikes, describing what happened as an "aggression," warning of its repercussions and stressing that the group would take what he called retaliatory measures.
For its part, Al-Masirah TV, which is affiliated with the Houthis, reported that the strikes hit Sanaa International Airport, without disclosing the extent of the damage or losses they caused. Sources linked to the Houthis said the Iranian plane changed course after the airport runway was targeted.
Meanwhile, the Houthi-run Ministry of Transport accused Saudi Arabia of being behind the attack, calling it a dangerous escalation, while the Yemeni government confirmed that targeting the runway was aimed at preventing an Iranian plane from landing at the airport.
This development comes amid tense conditions threatening the path of de-escalation, with fears growing over a return to military escalation between Yemeni and regional parties.
