Informed political sources said the situation on the ground has not changed and the shelling is still ongoing despite the extended truce, while the launch of the Lebanese-Israeli security negotiation track on May 29 will delve into details related to how to consolidate the ceasefire and ensure stability, which constitutes a Lebanese demand from which there will be no retreat.
The sources told Al Liwaa newspaper that ceilings have been set regarding the Lebanese side, which had previously made its position clear on adhering to Lebanon’s sovereignty and protecting the security and safety of its citizens, while stressing an Israeli withdrawal and commitment to the exclusivity of arms. The sources also noted their appreciation for the participation of the head of the Lebanese delegation, former ambassador Simon Karam, in conveying and firmly upholding the Lebanese position.
Diplomatic sources observed that what is happening in the south, both on the ground and in terms of contacts and efforts, ranges between de-escalation and a broad explosion, amid a U.S. effort that cannot be bypassed and that is aimed at preventing a slide into a wide-scale flare-up in the south and in Lebanon as a whole.
Al Liwaa learned that the French and Germans appear concerned that the situation could spiral out of control if the truce is not consolidated.
