Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmed Hajar received the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and former Iraqi President Barham Salih in his office this morning, in the presence of the Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Rima Jamous Imseis, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza, UNHCR Representative in Lebanon Carolina Billing, and the accompanying delegation. The meeting discussed the general situation in Lebanon in light of ongoing developments.
Minister Hajar stressed during the meeting that “the top priority for Lebanon at this stage is to reach a ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of support from Arab and friendly countries to Lebanon, as well as the pivotal role played by UN agencies, especially in light of the displacement of more than one million Lebanese citizens who were forced to leave their homes in targeted towns and villages.”
He also outlined the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities and the measures adopted to respond to these exceptional circumstances, in addressing both security and humanitarian challenges.
For his part, Salih expressed his full solidarity with Lebanon and its people in these difficult conditions, affirming efforts to mobilize international support and provide the necessary assistance, while expressing hope that Lebanon will be able to overcome the current crisis as soon as possible.
