U.S. President Donald Trump revealed divisions within the U.S. administration over how to handle the Iranian file, stressing that Washington stands between two options: reaching a new agreement with Tehran or resorting to military action.
In remarks to Axios, Trump said he was “50 percent torn between a deal with Iran or bombing,” adding: “Either we sign an agreement or I hit them hard.”
He noted that a meeting of senior advisers would be held today to discuss the latest draft of the agreement, pointing out that a final decision could be made tomorrow. He also announced an upcoming meeting with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to discuss Iran’s latest response, with the possibility that J.D. Vance may join the meeting.
Trump stressed that he would not accept any agreement that does not address uranium enrichment and the fate of Iran’s current stockpile, affirming that there is a divergence within U.S. decision-making circles between those pushing for a settlement and those who prefer resuming war.
He also denied reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was concerned about the possibility of reaching an “inappropriate” agreement with Iran, saying that this was “not true.”
