A broad meeting was held at the Directorate General of Land and Maritime Transport, in line with directives from the Minister of Public Works and Transport, with the participation of Director General Ahmad Tamer, Head of Land Transport Unions Bassam Tlais, the Head of the Land Transport Authority, and members of the ministry’s team.
The meeting was dedicated to discussing taxi fare regulations amid mounting pressures on the sector due to exceptional circumstances, most notably the continuous global rise in fuel prices and its direct impact on operating costs.
Discussions focused on developing a clear mechanism to regulate fares and limit violations, in a way that ensures a balance between the interests of citizens and the rights of drivers, given the current challenges.
Participants also stressed the importance of adopting a balanced approach to the issue, enhancing coordination with the land transport sector, and taking into account the growing burdens resulting from rising gasoline prices.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Tamer stated that “it was decided to submit the agreed recommendations to the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Fayez Rassamni, for appropriate decisions.”
Minister Rassamni had previously affirmed his commitment to “finding realistic and fair solutions, and taking practical measures that balance citizens’ purchasing power with the sustainability of the sector,” stressing the need to strengthen coordination among all concerned parties to reach sustainable solutions that ensure sector stability and ease the burden on citizens amid the current exceptional circumstances, until conditions stabilize.”
