Statements attributed to a sheikh named Abu Khaled, who identified himself as the “Emir of the Arbin area,” have sparked widespread controversy in Syrian circles after he announced the city’s transformation into an “independent emirate” separate from Damascus.
According to what has been circulated, Abu Khaled indicated that “the priority will be the implementation of Sharia in the city instead of law or the constitution,” prompting the remarks to spread widely across social media platforms.
These positions drew significant reaction, amid the absence of any official confirmation or comment from Syrian government authorities regarding what has been attributed to him so far.
Meanwhile, the Syrian authorities have issued no clarification regarding the circulating information, while observers considered that talk of a separate administration or bypassing the constitutional and institutional frameworks raises sensitive questions, especially in light of the country’s current political and security conditions.
