The Ministry of Economy and Trade has put an end to a pricing violation at a café in the capital, Beirut, after Consumer Protection Directorate teams moved in following complaints from citizens about prices the ministry described as excessive.
The ministry announced that inspectors immediately headed to the location, where they carried out the necessary inspection and found serious violations in the pricing mechanism, prompting the filing of a violation report against the establishment concerned in preparation for taking the appropriate legal measures.
The ministry stressed that activating the citizen’s role in monitoring markets is a key element in protecting consumer rights, praising initiatives aimed at preserving Lebanon’s image and its tourist season and preventing any practices that harm citizens and visitors.
It explained that the case will be referred next Monday to the Financial Public Prosecution during official working hours, with a request to apply the maximum penalties stipulated by law against the violators.
The Ministry of Economy also pointed out that the new Consumer Protection Law, approved by Parliament, is awaiting publication in the Official Gazette and entry into force, a step that will strengthen inspectors’ powers and grant them judicial police status, in addition to allowing the publication of the names of repeat offenders in accordance with the legal framework.
