Questions are once again being raised about the performance of the International Criminal Court, which is supposed to represent the “court of last resort for international justice,” amid mounting accusations of incapacity and double standards, particularly with regard to war files and violations linked to the war in Gaza.
In this context, the ICC’s denial of a report published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz about the issuance of secret arrest warrants against five Israeli officials has sparked fresh debate over the court’s independence and its ability to proceed with measures against Israeli figures amid accusations of violations against Palestinians.
The newspaper had quoted a diplomatic source as saying that the court had secretly issued arrest warrants against Israeli officials as part of procedures aimed at protecting the course of the investigation. However, the court quickly denied issuing any new warrants at the current stage related to the situation in Palestine.
This development comes amid growing criticism directed at the court over the slow pace of its judicial process and its hesitation in dealing with files related to Israel, despite the continuing military operations in Gaza and increasing international calls to hold those responsible for violations accountable.
