Berri discusses regional developments with the Egyptian ambassador... Cairo reaffirms its full support for Lebanon

Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri received the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Lebanon, Alaa Moussa, at the second presidency headquarters in عين التينة, where talks addressed developments in Lebanon and the region, as well as the latest political and field developments and regional efforts aimed at de-escalation and supporting stability.

Following the meeting, Egyptian Ambassador Alaa Moussa said: "I met with Speaker Nabih Berri, and in fact my visit to him today comes within the framework of my regular visits and meetings with Speaker Berri."

He added: "As you know, many things are taking place in the region and they have clear repercussions. Therefore, it was necessary for me to brief him on the latest developments and the efforts Egypt is making in an attempt to calm the situation and return once again to the negotiating table with regard to the situation between the United States and Iran."

Moussa continued: "We also discussed the situation in Lebanon and the measures being taken. As you know, Speaker Berri always stresses in every meeting, and specifically with me, one fundamental and necessary matter: a complete halt to the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, a full withdrawal from all Lebanese territory, the return of the displaced, and the start of the reconstruction process."

He added: "There are obligations incumbent on all parties, and therefore we are working to calm matters and to strengthen the tracks that move toward achieving these goals. It was also an opportunity to reaffirm that Egypt is striving with full force to stop the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and to enable the Lebanese state to impose its authority over all its territory, as is required of الجميع, whether inside Lebanon or outside Lebanon. That was the focus of my discussion with Speaker Berri."

In response to a question about whether the meeting touched on the summit that brought together US President Donald Trump and President General Joseph Aoun, Moussa said: "In fact, we briefly discussed the mention of Speaker Berri at the press conference, and the fact that he was mentioned positively. This is important and confirms Speaker Berri's standing and role in political life in Lebanon."

Regarding Egypt's position on supporting Lebanon and the importance of the Arab umbrella, the Egyptian ambassador said: "I assure you that Egypt's position is firm and clear: supporting any path that ultimately leads, according to a clear timetable, to a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, the return of our displaced brothers to their villages and towns, and the beginning of the reconstruction process. Any path that advances and serves these goals has Egypt's full support. There are now pilot areas where work began yesterday, and we hope this will extend to other areas, leading to a complete Israeli withdrawal from all Lebanese territory. It is a step that we should look at and build upon in the future. Of course, for this experiment to succeed, what is required is: first, commitment from the parties; second, providing the Lebanese Army with the capabilities and support it needs to carry out its tasks, because its duties are not limited only to these three pilot areas—there are other areas to come. Supporting the Lebanese Army is therefore extremely important. Accordingly, any talk of providing support to the Lebanese Army, whether bilaterally or through a conference—as you know, there is also talk of a conference to support the Lebanese Army—will undoubtedly be backed by Egypt. You know that we hosted the preparatory conference at the beginning of the year, but the circumstances that arose prevented the international conference from being held. We therefore hope that the coming period will witness easier procedures for convening this conference."

As part of his meetings, Speaker Berri also followed up on the general situation and the latest developments during his reception of former Minister of Public Works and Transport and presidential adviser for reconstruction affairs, Ali Hamieh.
