
The participants’ remarks focused on the importance of peace in the region and the world, the need to halt the conflict in Lebanon, and the role Europe can play in cooperation with Middle Eastern countries in this regard, alongside stressing the strengthening of relations between the European continent and the countries of the region in general.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides underscored the importance of the meeting that was held, praising President Aoun’s firm leadership and affirming strong support for Lebanon and its sovereignty. He pointed to the importance of engaging in direct talks between Lebanon and Israel, while stressing the need to achieve peace in the world and the Middle East.
For his part, European Council President Antonio Costa expressed concern over the situation in Lebanon, saying:
"The situation in Lebanon remains a source of great concern for us. We hope for the extension of the ceasefire and for its implementation on the ground, and we call for continued diplomatic efforts within the framework of full respect for international law, the sovereignty of the Lebanese state, and its territorial integrity."
He considered Hezbollah to pose an "existential threat to Lebanon" and to be "a serious destabilizing factor for peace and hope in the region," praising the decision taken by the Lebanese state to ban Hezbollah’s military activities and describing it as "historic."
He affirmed continued support for the Lebanese authorities in efforts aimed at disarming Hezbollah, saying that "this is the only sustainable solution to restore stability in Lebanon."
He added that "it is encouraging to see the start of talks between Lebanon and Israel, and it is important that they continue," affirming the continuation of European humanitarian and economic support.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, for her part, welcomed the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, considering that "security is indivisible, and stability cannot be enjoyed in Europe, the Gulf, and the region while Lebanon is burning." She called for respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence, stressing the need for a lasting path to peace, while confirming continued European support and assistance amounting to 100 million euros allocated for humanitarian, medical, and other aid.
Meanwhile, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa affirmed his country’s readiness to contribute to anything that would enhance peace, security, and stability in the region, as well as its desire to strengthen cooperation with the European continent.
