Information obtained by Al Jadeed revealed that discussions are continuing over the mechanism for overseeing the implementation of the stages of weapons withdrawal, amid differing views between the Lebanese and Israeli sides over the body that will assume the task of monitoring and verification after the Lebanese Army completes the process.
According to the information, the Israeli side is demanding the formation of a supervisory committee comprising Israel and the US Central Command, along with a third party approved by Tel Aviv, while ruling out the inclusion of UNIFIL in this arrangement.
In contrast, the Lebanese side is discussing a problem related to the concept of “verification,” particularly with regard to the possibility of supervising bodies entering private property, as this step would require a legal amendment or Lebanese judicial cover allowing it to be carried out.
The information indicates that the issue of monitoring mechanisms and the powers granted to the supervising body constitutes one of the most prominent points under discussion, as each side seeks to entrench its vision of the nature of the next phase and the guarantees for implementation.
