German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has proposed studying the possibility of deploying a European Union force in Lebanon to assume security duties after the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expires, with the aim of avoiding any potential security vacuum.
In an interview with the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland network, Wadephul said the European Union should examine the possibility of ensuring continued stability through a “European mandate” following the end of UNIFIL’s mission, whose mandate expires on December 31, 2026.
The German minister stressed that Lebanon, under a stable government, represents “one of the most promising developments in the region at the moment,” underscoring the importance of preserving stability and preventing any security deterioration.
The German proposal comes as countries participating in UNIFIL prepare to discuss the future of the international mission in Lebanon, after years of deployment along the southern border under the framework of a United Nations Security Council resolution.
