The United States announced sanctions on nine individuals, saying they contribute to enabling Hezbollah to undermine Lebanon’s sovereignty and obstruct the path toward political and economic stability in the country.
The sanctions list included a number of MPs and political and security figures, among them Ahmad Asaad Baalbaki, Ibrahim al-Moussawi, Hassan فضل الله, Mohammad Abdul Muttalib Fneish, Samer Adnan Hammadi, Hussein Ali al-Hajj Hassan, Khattar Nassereddine, Ahmad Safawi, and Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani, in addition to two officers and security officials, including the head of Army Intelligence’s office in Beirut’s southern suburbs, Colonel Samer Hamadeh, Amal Movement security official Ahmad Baalbaki, the movement’s commander in the south Ahmad Safawi, and the head of the Analysis Department at General Security, Brigadier General Khattar Nassereddine.
Washington said these individuals, through their support for what it described as the “terrorist organization,” are helping implement an Iran-linked agenda inside Lebanon and are directly obstructing the path to peace and economic recovery.
It added that Hezbollah’s continued refusal to hand over its weapons prevents the Lebanese state from achieving stability and prosperity.
In a related context, it explained that the sanctions also target individuals accused of obstructing efforts to disarm the group, including MPs and an Iranian diplomat whom it said is violating Lebanese sovereignty, in addition to Lebanese security officials suspected of exploiting their positions.
The United States reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Lebanese people and their official institutions, noting that the US State Department’s Rewards for Justice program is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the disruption of Hezbollah’s financial mechanisms.
