Al-Sharaa: Damascus will not intervene militarily in Lebanon and is seeking a security understanding with Tel Aviv

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said in an interview with Al Jazeera that Damascus is not planning any military intervention in Lebanese affairs, explaining that his country is discussing with the Lebanese government ways to prevent Lebanon from sliding into chaos. He stressed that the Lebanese crisis requires a comprehensive approach that is not limited to the security dimension alone, warning that any unrest in Lebanon would be directly reflected inside Syria.

Regarding the weapons issue, al-Sharaa expressed دمشق’s support for restricting arms and the decision of war and peace exclusively to the Lebanese state, while at the same time voicing concern over the possibility of the conflict spreading across the region.

As for relations with Israel, the Syrian president said his country is keen to avoid any confrontation with it because such a clash would not serve its interests, revealing ongoing efforts to reach a security understanding with Tel Aviv, with the participation of several countries. He explained that the success of this track could pave the way for broader peace, but without relinquishing Syria’s historic right to the occupied Golan, noting that the lifting of economic sanctions on Syria remains incomplete unless it is removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
